Sailing Education

Which program is right for me?

Chartered in 1881 “To promote, encourage, support, improve and advance boating and enjoyment both athletic and social,” Chelsea Yacht Club offers US Sailing programs for both youths and adults to promote our mission for future generations!

Youth Sailing Academy

All Youth Sailing Academy instructors are US Sailing trained and use curricula designed by US Sailing. All new sailors are provided with Learn Sailing Right, Beginning Sailing and, when they achieve the appropriate level, with Learning Sailing Right, Intermediate Sailing.

Half-Day Program

For children 8 and 9 years old, this program is intended to give younger children a less intensive taste of sailing with greater individual attention.

Full-Day Program

Six one-week full-day sessions for youths 10 to 17 years old sailing in Optimist Prams and 420s.The class is open to all levels, from beginner to more experienced sailors. All participants, especially new sailors, are strongly encouraged to attend a minimum of two consecutive sessions to reinforce their new skills and make the most of their experience.

Adult Sail

Learn-to-Sail

Learn-to-Sail is designed for the first-time and novice sailors who would like to test the waters and acquire or improve their sailing skills. This primarily on-water class covers all the fundamentals one needs to know to become a safe, competent sailor.

Custom Sailing Lessons

Custom Sailing Lessons are primarily for those who already have their own boat and would like to work on key aspects of their sailing skills or seamanship with the positive reinforcement of a US Sailing Certified Instructor. Families are encouraged to take this course together.

Seminars

Seminars are offered on a variety of topics throughout the year. Come learn about topics including navigation and rules of the road, knot tying, pendant making, anchoring, small powerboat/dinghy operation and safety. Classes are offered both on land and on the water by US Sailing Certified Instructors.

Women Who Sail

Meets every Thursday evening May thru September. Open to CYC members and their guests who would like to come down for fun and fellowship with other awesome women sailors. Women members use their own boats and invite others to join them!

Dinghy Sailing

This program is designed to introduce new sailors to the sport and to help experienced sailors to bring specific skills to a higher level. Using a clinic-type approach with a low instructor-to-student ratio, the program accommodates different skill levels and caters to the needs of the individual student.

Additional Educational Courses

The club offers ongoing educational courses and classes to members and some open to the public.
